The Print Cast is all about ink on paper, sort of. Host Nick Naughton peels back the layers revealing the wide world of printmaking happening today. Print is an expanding medium touching on product design, illustration, graphic design, fine art, and it’s still a powerhouse of production for many of our every day items. The show features conversations with artists, designers, and press people, and Naughton works to unveil the hidden stories behind the graphic art we all love.
||ExplicitEpisode 1: Hugh Merrill||Hugh Merrill’s art is a conversation with his art form, printmaking. His work is about process and change; a call and response activity where variation is the intention, not the by-product. He creates sequential narratives in his studio practice, resulting in work that is diverse, expansive, evolving and conversational with itself, the artist and the print medium. “Variation is a means to come closer to articulating the essence of truth,” he says, and you can witness this in Merrill’s print work. Hugh Merrill has taught and lectured on printmaking at over 75 universities, colleges, and schools worldwide. He has spoken at numerous conferences including SGCI and the College Art Association, and in 2007 he received the distinguished education award from Southern Graphics Council. His work has been exhibited and collected by major museums including, MOMA, The Daum Museum, The Harvard Art Museum, Minneapolis Museum of Art, and the Nelson Atkins Museum of Art. He continues to work for many community and arts organizations, has an active studio practice and teaches at the Kansas City Art Institute. His most recent book is called Preaching to the Choir: a collection of essays and writings on Hugh’s art and his life as a printmaker.||12/12/2017||Free||View in iTunes|
||ExplicitIntroducing the Print Cast||In this first episode of the Print Cast your host Nick Naughton briefly talks about his plans for the podcast. He'll discuss how he'll connect with artists, designers and makers to discuss the roll that printmaking plays in their creative work. The Print Cast is interview based and the aim is to connect the disparate parts of the printmaking field with the hopes of capturing the vitality of the contemporary art form. Shows will be published bi-weekly with artists, designers, and graphic arts professionals sharing their work, their life stories, and talking about everything related to their art in the context of printmaking. Naughton works professionally as a custom printmaker at his studio La Cucaracha Press in Kansas City, Missouri. He's undergoing a life-change as he makes the show, transitioning from the work of printing for others to a creative studio with more art and design based practices. La Cucaracha Press is moving to Los Angeles, California in 2018, so the show will follow Naughton as he closes down shop, interviews a slew of Midwest talent, and then moves to call the west coast home. The show will then become a national platform where Naughton will work to showcase the talented creatives working in the field, no matter what the work is or where it is taking place.||11/14/2017||Free||View in iTunes|
