||Guest Mix: Foodman||For someone who creates the mutant amalgamations of genres and styles that Foodman is notorious for, boy was I f*****g surprised when he sent over this mix to our quaint TMT headquarters. Loungy, peaceful, and smoother than Engelbert Humperdinck's freshly-peeled breakfast of hardboiled eggs, "TMT_foodman_mix" was not at all what I was expecting. But, that isn't a bad thing. Predictability is for the weak, and as my Aunt Ant always said, "KILL THE WEAK AND SHOWER THE LAND WITH THEIR PICKED CLEANED BONES, YOU WORTHLESS NEPHEW OF MINE!!!" ||Guest Mix: Cube||My Cube, the new album by Cube (a.k.a. Oakland resident Adam Keith), begins with "First," somehow a lethal subconscious variation on "Undercover of the Night" that's built on shaky ever-shifting soil, on tape jams and spool tangles. The potential for electronic collapse is as real as the possibility of total alignment. Screws are loosened just to see if they'll stay and for how long. It's a rowdy entrance, tipping its cap for turbulence and saying, "Howdy, you can relax now, you're in it already." Cube's guest mix is not a giveaway as to why any of this happens. The tracks selected do not disclose inspiration. However, they do reveal personality. Jellied interjections and mutations occur, leisurely... sipping a mint julep with the radio at foot. One nudge and the radio with the tall antenna tips into the muck for a shock or two. No dead giveaway; it's mostly mint juleps, a little strong, with tall and thick stems. Suppose alchemy can happen when muddling mint, stomping grapes, or nudging radios into the muck for a shock or two. Stream below, and subscribe to our podcast here. Out today, Physicalist is their first release through Kranky, and they are celebrating with Interspecies Smalltalk: an-hour long mix of critter whispers, backwoods backtalk, and hot treetop gossip. ||Guest Mix: Tim Barnes & Jeph Jerman||For over a decade, experimental musicians Jeph Jerman and Tim Barnes have been collaborating both on stage and in the studio, offering obfuscated explorations into the material potentials of a variety of known and unknown sound sources. Versatile Ambiance is their latest release — following last year's excellent Matterings on Erstwhile Records — and it continues their minimalistic journey with a patient, displaced inventory of sounds, where contrasting shapes and blurred textures evoke nothing but the tension listener's might feel while trying to reconcile the lack of clarity with the continual introduction of new sounds. On the eve of a joint tour through California, Tim Barnes and Jeph Jerman are graciously sharing a guest mix, titled Greetings From The Versatile Ambience. Read these words from Barnes about the mix, followed by the dates for the tour. From Orthodox Ehtiopian Church Music to This Heat to deeep Mexican Mountain Music, along with Footwork and delicious DUB skanking, "Greetings From The Versatile Ambience" should keep you smiling and scratching your head for the time being. Enjoy!! Versatile Ambiance is out now on Idea Intermedia. Stream the mix below, and subscribe to our podcast here. ||Guest Mix: Archivist||Seattle's Archivist (Alex Markey) has been a key player in the recent emergence of the secondnature crew. The group, whose core members also include Aos, død, Nick Carroll, Fugal, Simic, and DJ Eddie Lee, first came to prominence throwing house parties in Tacoma, Washington. They moved on to weekend-long ragers at cabins in the Washington wilderness, where the burgeoning producers would showcase their own material alongside deep cuts of techno, house, and anything to keep the parties fresh and wild. Recently, the parties and events have migrated to clubs and show spaces in the Seattle area, and to further document, the creative electronic sounds of this group, they've launched a label under the secondnature banner (the first EP, from Berlin's Fugal, not surprisingly, is already sold out). Since we've covered Archivist recently, I knew he could provide the dopest of mixes for our Choco mix series, and the resulting mix is as clutch as they come. Alex had this to say about the set: This mix was a happy accident. I had bought a couple of new records and I was just jamming at home on a weekday afternoon. I was having fun and decided to turn on the recorder on a whim, and ended up having a great little session without a lot of planning. Most of these tracks have been in pretty constant rotation for me recently, with selections from a few of my favorite labels. Jam the mix below, subscribe to our podcast here, and peep the tracklist for those deep cuts. ||Guest Mix: Orphan Swords||Orphan Swords, a SHAPE-affiliated duo based in Brussels, have been making a name for themselves with their scorching brand of techno- and industrial-influenced electronic music, spread over the last few years across a handful of 12-inches, CD-Rs, and cassettes. According to the group, their new album, WEEHAWKEN, is inspired by "demonology and the world of finance," and it's composed of tracks both old and new for Glasgow's Clan Destine label. It's heavy, fiery music, hypnotic and drifting and abrasive. The duo has kindly shared a guest mix with us called Outsourcing in a Brave New World, which pulls together tracks from artists as varied as a COH, Wreck & Reference, Matmos, and Death in June. Listen to it below. And if you're in Bucharest, be sure to check out their show September 17 at a SHAPE event organized by the Rokolectiv festival.
