A new family history podcast hosted by A.J. Jacobs. They say we’re one big family: this is the show that proves it. You will be filled with delight… or abject horror. You never know. It’s family.

lives and dies by the quality of the guests

I am a huge fan of Gimlet, but this is a rare misfire. The host, AJ Jacobs, has very little charisma--and he talks a LOT. Like his previous work, this is gimicky. The premise exposes one of the inherent absurdities of genealogy: the idea that tenuous connections to "ancestors" and cousins many times removed have any bearing on who we are as individuals. The feel-good conclusion of this--we are all sooo alike and connected!!--is unconvincing and forced. And did I mention that the host has little skill as a storyteller?

Despite this, the first two episodes had their moments. Dan Savage's seemingly genuine emotion was very moving--even if it threw into contrast how emotionally empty Jacobs' narration was. The second episode was weaker, in part because the guest seemed less emotionally involved than Savage was. This podcast could shine with strong guests, but overall it's a misstep for the usually reliable Gimlet.

Totally pumped!

I'm really excited for this podcast to air! It's a fresh, original idea that no one has tried yet. Gimlet puts out a lot of high quality shows, I don't expect this one to be any less fantastic!

The trailer sounds fabulous. On pins and needles waiting for first episode.
