Some of us plead with God for help when things aren’t going well, but then forget about him when our lives are back on top. Others of us praise God when all is well, but when hardships come, our faith in God seems to falter. In other words, most of us are either pleaders or praisers. The problem with this approach is that our faith can become contingent on our circumstances. Today on Palm Sunday, we’re going to explore the kind of faith that teaches us to plead and praise at the same time!

There’s a phrase we use to describe our relationships when they are feeling unstable, uncertain, or compromised. The phrase we use is: “it’s complicated.” But the truth is our relationships are complicated only if we complicate them. The scriptures give us clear, simple, uncomplicated principles to guide our relationships. When we follow the teachings of scripture, our relationships might not always be easy, but they don’t ever have to be complicated.

In the early 1900s, many people believed that cigarettes helped to cure asthma. Of course, we now know that cigarettes are extremely harmful for a person’s lungs, and do nothing to help asthma sufferers. But for several years the falsehood about the benefits of cigarettes were embraced, causing many people harm. The false belief led to flawed behavior. Today, many of us still embrace false beliefs about our relationships. The beliefs lead to behaviors that harm our relationships rather than help them. Almost no one likes conflict. Most of us avoid conflict whenever possible because conflict can easily and quickly escalate into toxic and destructive words and behaviors. But sometimes, our avoidance of conflict can also become a problem. We can end up experiencing shallow and artificial harmony in our relationships without ever resolving deeper underlying feelings.
