Customer Reviews

Off to an excellent start!

I usually don't write reviews for podcasts with only one episode under their belt, but the inaugural episode of Upgrade was good enough to warrant an exception to that rule. Sometimes you can just tell a show is going to be great. I enjoyed the entire episode, and more importantly, I expect this show to maintain that level of quality given the track record of the hosts.

Jason Snell is obviously extremely knowledgeable and insightful when it comes to anything technology-related, particularly when it comes to Apple. I'm looking forward to hearing his thoughts on Apple, as well as other tech companies I don't hear him talk about as much, like Amazon, Google, Microsoft, Facebook, etc. The man knows how to put together excellent podcasts, as demonstrated by podcasts like The Incomparable.

Myke Hurley, whom I first heard of when his podcasts moved to the 5by5 network, has also become someone whose opinion I respect and whose podcasts I look forward to each week. Myke's new podcast network, Relay FM, is already impressive, despite being a few weeks old. Some shows like Connected are familiar since they moved from 5by5 to Relay FM with the same format and hosts, but the new shows like Upgrade and Analog(ue) are proving to be just as impressive and somehow instantly familiar.

I'll update this review if Upgrade takes a serious nosedive, but honestly, I don't see that happening. Upgrade has already earned a spot in my podcast player's "Top Shelf" playlist.

Not Enough Content

This podcast is hosted by two of the nicest people in tech. But I think it’s worth taking the time to offer a critique, while it’s still young and in its early days. First, the positive, once the hosts get to the actual content of the show, everything is wonderful and very informative. Jason is very experienced, and has unique insight - and I’m always fascinated by his unique perspective on tech issues, especially Apple. But the problem is, it takes the hosts sooooo long to get to the content. They ramble on about nothing at all, as if they’re having a conversation with each other, as opposed to presenting a show to the public. Occasionally, the tangents lead to some interesting info, but for the most part it’s really hard to listen to. Second, I want to mention that I was initially under the impression that this was an Apple show. It’s definitely not. It’s a tech show. That’s totally fine. But I think you guys should decide whether you’re going to focus on Apple or tech. Because frankly, during some of the big announcements, there wasn't as much detailed info about Apple as I would have liked. And now that Apple’s fall announcement have passed, Apple hardly comes up at all.

Ok this last bit is just my fantasy, ok? Here goes! I really love it when tech journalists talk big picture. I like it when they talk about where things are going. I like it when they’re critical of tech companies too. Because a lot of Apple podcasts do nothing but praise Apple. I make my living using Apple products, so I experience Apple shortcoming everyday. That’s why I love big picture pronouncements and real world criticisms. But that’s just me. Thanks guys!

Top Apple Podcast Today

I love a good Apple-centric podcast and this is the best of the best right now. I've bounced around to all the others and had to drop them for one reason or another. TWiT (and by relation, MacBreak) is mean spiritied, ATP is like nails on a chalkboard. iMore has been a total dumpster fire as of late. Upgrade and the Talk Show with Gruber are where it's at. Succinct, on topic, professionally produced, and a good mix of technical and tech enthusiast. Upgrade is willing to dole out criticism when it's due, but generally a positive take on Apple. Well done fellas. Keep it up.
