Amazing ideas and content, occasional issues with presentation
I listened to this first season every week and started to feel very uncomfortable as time went on. Not because of the incredible work Jana does to draw attention to issues facing POC and political activism, but because I started to hear an undercurrent of bitterness and whine when Jana speaks to other fat women who seem to be happy or healthy in their romantic life. It started to make me feel rather angry to be listening to someone who seems to be so empowering in some ways, but it seems as though there is a patina of self loathing that can’t be shook. That’s obviously okay- everyone has their own body centric journey. But the other amazing messages in the pod were overshadowed by these bits for me and I’m not sure I can listen to season 2.
I lost respect as soon as I read the article where Jana Schmieding tried to claim she was fat-shamed by the staff of the Harry Potter ride at Universal. They wouldn't let her on the ride because the seat belt would fit around her. You were not kicked out, you were politely taken aside and told that you couldn't fit on the ride. I've worked in the park. In the line for this ride you have 2 separate opportunities to sit in a tester seat on your own to see if the restraints will fit you. Every single day there are a lot of big people who choose to ignore this and try to get on the ride anyway, at which point a staff member has to tell them they will not fit. And mind you, the staff for this ride are specifically trained to be sensitive and stay away from terms such as the obvious "fat." Still, these people will then march to guest relations like spoiled brats who didn't get their way and swear, "That employee called me fat and made me get off the ride!" For anyone who hasn't been on the ride, it moves fast and swings in every direction. Big bodies can't be tossed around like that and the weight restrictions on this kind of equipment are very strict. Outside of this specific example, I don't think it's smart to start adjusting the entire world to fit big bodies. A few large seats in public places where it's necessary, sure. But in these types of leisure activities, it's a privilege and not a necessity. We should find ways to encourage people to not become so big rather than to redesign a world that caters to obesity.
All the right resources in one place
From Lindy West’s ‘shrill’ to Virgie Tovar this podcast is like a roadmap to the resources we all need to walk the road of self acceptance and love. It’s clever, fun and helpful.
I wish I could have happy hour with all of these ladies and absorb their combined years of wisdom and practice!
