WSR07 Chris Knab podcast

We owe much to Chris’ station, KCMU, and DJ Leon Berman, who gave us airplay, a live on-air broadcast, and a support spot at the Seattle annual Rockabilly Ball in 1994. His 4 front strategy reminds me of the strategy we learned from Gary Hustwit in those days- you want to be touring, while your CD is in the stores, while it is being played on the radio, while they are writing about you in the press. I liked to explain the strategy as a table standing on 4 legs. Take away a leg and the table falls. In my experience the strategy of 4 fronts is very self evident. What is more difficult is finding band members who will commit to the strategy, because it requires a lot of work, delayed gratification, and a willingness to leave your comfort zone. 99% of musicians will instead opt to play covers locally until the band stagnates and the audience grows tired of them. Chris’ book is the correct recipe for a chance at success in the music business.

Cool concept

The old joke goes, "What's the difference between a musician and a large pizza? A pizza can feed a family of four." Ba-dump-ts!
WSR's Andrew wants to change that and help musicians learn marketing techniques. He interviews smart people in the industry and provides a portal (via his website) for musicians to up level their exposure. Five stars.

Great podcast for indie music marketing

Instead of the same old recycled cliches, Andrew goes out of his way to get guests with unique and useful information about the independent music world. They often have viewpoints and insights to the industry that are not heard in mainstream interviews and marketing seminars. This is a top-notch podcast for musicians, DJs, and marketing managers.
