This classic police drama was created and produced in 1968 by Jack Webb, who had already produced and starred in the highly successful Dragnet. Adam-12 followed the careers and lives of two Los Angeles police officers, veteran Patrol Officer Pete Malloy (Martin Milner) and rookie Jim Reed (Kent McCord). After his previous partner is killed in a gun battle, Pete Malloy, bitter and disillusioned, is teamed with the eager young rookie, Jim Reed. Malloy, feeling responsible for his new partner, is determined to keep him safe and alive. In the early years of the show the veteran and the eager young rookie each had something to teach the other. Each show followed the pair as they cruised the streets of Los Angeles, facing the day-to-day drama of real-life crime-fighting. Stories projected the whole gamut of police work from coverage of husband/wife spats and high speed automobile chases to the ultra-dangerous job of apprehending armed criminals. This involved daily assignments, close teamwork, and then-current law enforcement procedures right out of the files of the City of Los Angeles Police Department. The show ran seven years and was among the most popular police dramas of all time.
