Love and Freeze Rays in a Tick kind of world
I'll confess that I am most certainly not a Whedon fanboy (though I did love Firefly). However, I am a big fan of not-so-super superhero worlds like those in The Tick or the Venture Bros. I'm also a big fan of musicals. So, throwing these together could either be outstanding or an outstanding failure. Fortunately, it was the former. Yes, it was a bit campy, but in my opinion, that's a very very good thing. The songs were really well done, especially when Neil Patrick Harris is in the mix. I was surprised by his chops. Finally, seeing Neil Patrick Harris playing a doctor (even if he's an evil doctor) and updating a journal (even if it's a video blog) on the computer, I can't help but be reminded of Doogie Howser.
Joss does it again!!!
Joss Whedon the genius behind television's cult hits Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Firefly has created the highly anticipated Dr. Horrible's Sing-Along Blog. The great Neil Patrick Harris gives a heart warming performance as Dr. Horrible the pathetic, yet adorable scientist who fancies the girl from the laundry mat. The first act documents his unrequited love for Penny (Felica Day), and his foiled plans at the hands of Capt. Hammer his archnemesis (portrayed by Nathan Fillion). Harris, Fillion and Day all get the chance to belt out a tune and make up a wonderful 14 minutes of musical comedy. Personal favorite is Horrible's "Freeze-Ray" song. Joss Whedon does it again!
Mwahahahahaha! Mwaaa! Ha! Mwa. Ha... umm. Mmm. How was that?
This is utterly evocative of "Once More With Feeling", the musical episode of Buffy the Vampire Slayer (also a Joss Whedon creation). I absolutely loved "Once More..." and this is no exception - Whedon delivers with awesome music and lyrics, and he brings back Nathan Fillion to boot! Nathan's an amazing actor, and between his and Neil Patrick Harris' perfect comic delivery, this series is already off to a rousing start. This is the first time I've given anything five stars, and each one is deserved.
