At long last, Emily Owens feels like she is an actual grown-up. She can finally put her high school days as the geeky-girl-with-flop-sweats behind her. She's graduated from medical school, and she’s beginning an internship at Denver Memorial Hospital, where, not-so-coincidentally, her med-school crush Will Collins is also an intern. So why does everyone keep warning Emily that the hospital is just like high school? She will soon finds out the hard way – her high school nemesis, the gorgeous, popular Cassandra Kopelson, is also a new intern at Denver Memorial. Another fellow intern, Tyra Dupre, warns Emily that the cliques at the hospital are all too familiar: the jocks have become orthopedic surgeons; the mean girls are in plastics; the rebels are in the ER, and Tyra has her own awkward place as the principal's kid – her father, Dr. Tim Dupre is the chief resident. Tyra latches onto Emily as a new friend, and immediately begins confiding in her – the fact that Tyra is a lesbian, that she hasn't come out to her father, that she is interested in dating a certain nurse - nothing is too personal for Tyra to share with Emily. She may have made one new friend, but it doesn't take long for Emily to realize that the long-standing rivalry she had with Cassandra back in high school is only going to grow. Now, both Emily and Cassandra are competing to impress the brilliant Dr. Gina Bandari, a world-famous cardiothoracic surgeon who has been an inspiration and role model to both of them for years. While Emily and Cassandra vie for Dr. Bandari's approval, they're also competing for Will's attention. Meanwhile, Emily is also getting to know the slightly nerdy, but smart and handsome resident Dr. Micah Barnes. Even with the long hours, the heavy workload, and no shortage of personal drama filling her first days as an intern, Emily still feels like she's the new geeky kid all over again, and it's just as awkward as high school. At Denver Memorial, Emily is just beginning to learn that although she may be a geek, she may also grow to be a great doctor, flop sweats and all.

I wasn't expecting much from this show after reading descriptions and viewing promos. After all, it's on The CW and that network hasn't aired a good regular drama since Veronica Mars. However, I downloaded the free pilot episode and decided to give it a try anyway.
I have to say that Emily Owens, M.D. by far exceeded my expectations and then some. I instantly felt connected to the main character and most of the supporting ones, which is always a good sign. If you can't connect with the characters, things get boring. The writing and plot were both great, and it all felt real. Nothing was over the top and melodramatic like Grey's Anatomy (which many people seem to be comparing this show to) tends to be. On another note, many "medical dramas" have a ridiculously fast pace where things seem to be over almost immediately after they begin. Emily Owens, M.D. rises above that tendency, it all flowed nicely at an even pace until the very end.
I would definitely recommend this show to others, and I can't wait to watch the rest of the season!
Very cool pilot
Wow - that was a very very cool pilot!
Without wanting to be remotely insulting, the main actress isn't a hollywood bimbo, and I felt more able to engage with her and the story because of that. The story was realistic with the same rollercoaster of ups and downs that we all experience every day.
Really looking forward to the next episode and the rest of this series! What a fantastic start!
Have you ever felt stupid and insecure?
If you have ever:
a) felt stupid
b) felt insecure
c) felt stupid and insecure
d) had a crush on someone
e) all of the above
…then you'll like this very human new show. It's pretty darn awesome.
And it has room to grow.
Kinda like House MD except less angry and more neurotic.
Love it. Can't wait for more episodes.
