A dark psychological crime drama starring Idris Elba as Luther, a detective struggling with his own terrible demons, who might well be just as dangerous as the depraved murderers he hunts. On a moral crusade, too often with only his convictions for company, John Luther is a brilliant but deeply troubled man, a philosophical cop possessed by the insoluble problem of evil and justice in a Godless world. Luther shines a light where others fear to tread, into the hearts and minds of psychopaths and killers, and the shadowy spaces of his own soul.

I'm from the UK and the US has been well and truly beating us down in the dramatic thriller stakes for a while now - I could name a hundred shows from House to Lie To Me that trounce any equivalents we have. But this show is truly incredible. I've watched the whole of the first season and I simply cannot wait till the next one.
Idris Elba (Russell Bell in The Wire and Charles Miner in The US Office) is awesome in this show. Don't expect a fake clean-shaven hero to lead you along the clear and morally-right path. He is a dark, scruffy, haggard man struggling with his own demons as he tracks down murderers on London's streets.
Simply put this is the best dramatic thriller I've seen in years. The next season is on its way and I'm hoping this will be a long-running series.
I watched the whole of this in the UK it is truly spectacular. Very dark, intellectually challenging and the production and directing really amazing. There's a hint of SEVEN in this first series. Even the music has some great twists, the play out music catches you every time. Can't recommend it more highly, best thing on British TV this year and you know we get some very good TV especially dramas.
Waiting for the season
I have been really down on American TV dramas for the past 4 years now. Just when you get interested in a show, (Life on Mars) they cancel it. Or they have so many reality shows, and stupid shows, (Cavemen) that I throw my hands up and say why bother. But just looking at the 4 minute preview of Luther, I will be tuning in when it comes on and watching it with great anticipation. I have always liked Idris Elba and now to see him in this drama, makes for very interesting viewing. So, I'll watch and keep my fingers crossed that it doesn't go the way of Life On Mars, or becomes another Cavemen.
