Season 3 is a disappointment!
What a let-down! Without Nick Cutter as a central character, Season 3 lacks the focus, energy, and excitement. Naturally, the producers had to develop other characters since Doug Henshall has left the series...but what a difference without him! I hope the show filmed several segments with Doug Henshall that they can use in future episodes (say, as flashbacks). Other disappointments...Jenny Lewis' appearance seems drab, her character has lost its spunk and chemistry with Nick Cutter, and her role doesn't seem PR-focused, but rather investigative. The power struggles over the ARC are tiresome and detract attention from what really attracts the international audience to the show--the anomalies and how the team handles the creatures that come out of them. Also, having a cop (Danny Quinn) take the place of a zoologist (Nick Cutter) seems like a misstep. I really liked this t.v. program and hadn't liked any program this much in a long time. What a shame that the part that I liked about it is finished.
*****spoiler alert!!!! It seems that when the main character, Nick Cutter (Douglas Henshall left), was killed, the series' direction got lost. The reason for it seemed forced and confusing. I enjoyed the chemistry of the cast more so than the plot lines, with Series 3 starting off after the death of Stephen Hart (James Murray), then Nick's death, and then Jenny Lewis (Lucy Brown left too) resigning, it was too much too soon. Stephen only died in the 13th episode (end of series 2), which to Americans is barely one season. I really enjoyed how the all characters interacted even evil Helen (Juliet Aubrey) and that is why I got hooked. That chemistry is gone in Series 3, the other characters brought in do not have it and the Connor/Abby (Potts/Spearitt) relationship is not enough. It also seems it was not enough for ITV as it was just canceled in June 2009. I am not sure if the movie rumors are true and if the original cast or storyline will be included.
A fun series. For a while I was only seeing shows like 24 and Lost. For me I enjoy shows that make me laugh as well as take me for a ride. This show, to me, is like a great combo of the X-Files and Jurassic Park. I enjoy Connor and Abby a lot. Though they seem to have no qualms about taking the previous story line and tossing it out the window (in the best way possible). It keeps me guessing. So for anyone who enjoys all around fun shows, I recommend.
