Life hasn't been the same for Elena (DeGrassi: The Next Generation's Nina Dobrev) since the tragic death of her parents, but she tries to pick up the pieces and provide support for her troubled younger brother, Jeremy (Steven R. McQueen). On her first day back at Mystic Falls High School, Elena meets the mysterious new guy, Stefan (Paul Wesley - Everwood), and the two seeming lost souls form an instant connection. What Elena doesn't know, however, is that Stefan is a vampire, constantly resisting the urge to taste her blood. But Stefan, it seems, has a greater evil to deal with when his dangerous older brother, Damon (Ian Somerhalder - Lost), shows up to wreak havoc on the town of Mystic Falls — and claim Elena for himself. The Vampire Diaries is based on the best-selling book series from Alloy Entertainment. Think you know vampires? You don't.

Vampire Fever Has Swept The Nation....

For anyone who thinks this is just a carbon copy of the Twilight Series, think again. I would say that they most likely have not read The Vampire Diaries Series. This series came out in 1991, well before Twilight. But, I do have to say that many of the same themes are drawn in both Series. True love, coming of age, trying to figure out your place in the world, and where you belong, tragedy, and the struggle between good and evil. I will say if you're a fan of Twilight you probably would enjoy this series, and show as well. Kevin Williamson was the creator of Dawson's Creek, which is one of my all time favorite shows, and I know he won't disappoint with this show as well. So, like me, if you're one of the many Americans being engulfed by the Vampire Fever, you should definitley tune in, and remember to read the books as well!

ooo, first review! Anyway, I've read all of these books, they were great! And don't say this is a rip off of Twilight, these books came out BEFORE twilight!!!! I am so excited for the show!!! =)

Awesome show...Horrible comparisons...

Ok, so I started watching the show before I read the books. I loved the show. I then purchased & read the books. I still love the show. What people need to remember is that it is based off of the series. The key word being "Based". Which gives hollywood free reign with character changing and plot lines. So even though most characters appear on the show from the book with some minor relationship changes (Matt and Vicki), it still has lots of potential. Another thing that people need to remember is that Twilight is a completely different series by a completely different author from a completely different time frame. One takes place in the 90's and one is current time. Yes, they have similarities and both are love stories. But that is where the comparisons should end. Two different books series, two different authors with two different takes on the same subject. Like there aren't hundreds of other books out there with the same type of story-line with different point of views. Comparing Vamp Diaries and Twilight is like comparing the True-Blood series to the Dark-Hunter series. Same genre, different takes. And then for the idiots on here writing a review for the show and only complaining about the paranormal genre and how you're so sick of vamps and werewolves and witches...if you don't like it, don't watch it. And complain somewhere else. I love the show and will continue to watch and enjoy the new storyline.
