In the series, Houdini, Doyle and Stratton are tasked with the cases that nobody else can solve. It challenges their sense of what is real and what is not. Houdini is a skeptic, while Doyle believes in the unseen. Their diverse viewpoints make solving crime a challenge and often Stratton is put in the middle. The trio will face cases that appear to involve vampires, ghosts, monsters and poltergeists…or are they a ruse to conceal murder?

Will this show win any Emmys? No. But it was fun and I enjoyed watching it, I'm glad I did and it has enjoyable dialogue. The set-ups for the mysteries are usually pretty interesting, even if the payoffs are kinda lame. But I would recommend it
Love Stephen Mangan
Not sure why the iTunes info doesn’t credit Stephen Mangan as the lead, I would watch him in anything. This show is much better than I expected. Great concept, I hope the writers keep delivering. Not crazy about the guy who plays Houdini — he’s overacting badly, and the other leads are so much better that it shows. Still, it’s so much more entertaining than most of the shows out now. Give it a try.
Do the math…. (2.5 stars)
This is a fine example of a mediocre (and I’m being generous) show trying to cannibalize the better things about already-successful shows.
1: Set in Victorian England
2: Pairing the Spiritualist and the Skeptic
3: Dark and gloomy sets
4: Heroes with an advanced understanding of forensics
5: Buffoons in Scotland Yard/Interpol/ CIA/FBI/rural America without a lick of common sense
6: Maximization of the marginalized/ Underdog wins out
7: Etc., etc., etc.
The *only* fact-based item of the show is that Houdini and Doyle were actually friends - but it was in the 1920s - and Doyle was much older than Houdini at the time of their friendship.
This is also a prime example that the whole is not equal to the sum of its parts.
