Paul Watson is the captain and founder of Sea Shepherd, a radical environmental group made up of self-proclaimed eco-pirates who fight for marine conservation. Their mission is to confront and stop Japanese fishing vessels from killing whales in Antarctica. Highlighting both the controversial whaling trade and the tactics that Sea Shepherd and its staff and volunteers use to attempt to cripple it, Whale Wars documents the group’s three-month sojourn across the icy Antarctic waters at the far end of the globe. Each episode is a powerful and adrenaline-fueled adventure that spotlights how Sea Shepherd takes action against alleged illegal whaling operations. The Society’s fight to eradicate Japanese whaling on the high seas — where international laws are interpreted by different countries and organizations in different ways — utilizes some aggressive techniques, including ramming and disabling whaling ships; disrupting whale carcass processing; engaging in physical entanglement; and boarding and dispersing fleets of whaling vessels.

Whale Warriors

I read the book "Whale Warriors" about the 2005/2006 campaign by Peter Heller. That book and this series about the 2007/2008 campaign to try to stay on the side of "documentary". Even so, the events told are gripping and unreal as well as enlightening. I encourage anyone with an interest in the whale debate to read the book and research the events online. You can even follow the 2008/2009 campaign as Paul Watson blogs on from the seas of Antarctica. Decide for yourself whether or not Sea Shepherd's interventions, while saving whales in the near term, are the correct long term approach. I think you will find the time well spent.

A Fantastic Program

It is about time we have a documentary about a group of concerned citizens defending what they know is right. This show provides insight to a little known (or often ignored) practice that needs national attention and international action. Thank you Sea Sheperd!

Great show - even if you don't agree with the politics

I do not by any means agree with this group's politics or their means of accomplishing their goals. However, I enjoyed this show much more than I anticipated. It is, first and foremost, entertainment and as such, achieves that goal. It's also greatly educational - it gives you a perspective on these people's motives and actions.
