Just north of the border, in the tired coastal town of Imperial Beach, CA, live three generations of surfing royalty turned societal misfits. The Yost family’s reign and reputation, once defined in the curl of a perfect wave, has been eroded by years of bad luck, addiction and hubris. But just as things look like they can’t get any worse, a stranger named John arrives — and the Yosts' banal existence is lifted into something profound, miraculous and, possibly, universal. From David Milch and 'surf-noir' novelist Kem Nunn comes this groundbreaking HBO drama series about the surfing Yost family whose awesome athletic talents have for generations seemed to come with a curse attached. Bruce Greenwood, Rebecca De Mornay, Brian Van Holt, Austin Nichols, Ed O’Neill, Luis Guzman, Matt Winston, Greyson Fletcher, Willie Garson and Luke Perry head up the ensemble cast.

Can you hear my father?
This is one of two television shows I have ever seen that have actually "changed my life". I know how that sounds, but it is true. I watched all 10 episodes in order when they came out on HBO. At the end of the season, I was left angry and scratching my head. I almost wrote an angry letter, but remembered that I had DVRed the episodes and decided that I would watch it one more time (because I had obviously missed "the point"). Im glad I made that decision. I HAD missed a lot during the first viewing, and had forgotten little nuances from week to week. Watching it all the way through and knowing a bit more what to look for made all the difference in the world. I have seen the whole thing through 5 times now and it keeps getting better (and easier to understand). If you have the time and inclination to watch something intelligent and complex, this is the show for you. Protip: It is done by the same guy as Deadwood, so you will be seeing a lot of the same characters from that show...and hearing a lot of the same language.
John From Cincinnati
This show is one of the most well written shows I have ever seen. This show somehow successfully combines scifi, drama, comedy, and action all into one very intriguing show. It leaves many questions at the end of the season. That's because however HBO didnt decide to continue the series, with much dissapointment, I was hoping that this show would go on for years. The characters are full, the writing is great, the premise of the show itself is very original I LOVED IT!
This Show is Not for You
But if it is...you will feel like the writers got inside your head and used your subconscious as inspiration to give you treats you never knew you had in you. It is almost physically painful that HBO killed it in its infancy but it would have been ugly to watch the show degenerate into something banal to be syndicated to A&E or TBS. So, the whole experience was...perfect.
