Shame on Discovery!
Now the Discovery Channel and any production company can take the 5 dumbest people of any group and just make stuff up? This show single handly ruins the Discovery Channel's reputation. It's absolute fiction, it's incredible they can get away with this. The reason they use old-order Amish in the background is because they (church rules) can't sue to stop the show from airing or even defamation. Absolute fake garbage in the poorest of taste.
Misleading, but still a good show
Alright - This show has all kinds of terrible reviews and comments from people that clearly have had little to no interaction with the Amish or Mennonite communities. The show does an excellent job of showing some of the lesser known aspects of Amish life such as Rumspringa. Although Amish choose for a much simpler life than most Americans, their life is not secluded from the temptations social ails of the outside world. In the interest of gaining viewers, Discovery Channel portrays these individuals as being pivotal Amish community and church - where-as these folks were not baptized in the Amish church and are clearly ancillary. But what reality show doesn't construe characters? Before you write a poor review, watch the show or even do a little research on the Amish - establish an understanding of what aspects of this show are fiction and what is accurate, but contrary to what many believe about the Amish. This is reality TV folks, not a documentary; it should be viewed and reviewed as such.
This show is very interesting, and it is entertaining. It is NOT an educational show or a documentary, it's a reality show. Don't judge it before you watch it. And think twice before you purchase, because although I enjoy watching this show, you might not like it. :)
