From Masterpiece on PBS. Emmy® Award-winning actor Jeremy Piven stars as American entrepreneur and colorful retail magnate Harry Gordon Selfridge. Pioneering and reckless, with an almost manic energy, Harry Selfridge created a theater of retail for early 1900s Londoners where any topic or trend that was new, exciting, entertaining–or sometimes just eccentric–was showcased. Created by Emmy® Award-winning writer Andrew Davies (Pride and Prejudice, Bleak House), the eight-part miniseries also stars Frances O’Connor (Madame Bovary), Aisling Loftus (Page Eight), Zoe Tapper (Zen), Amanda Abbington (Case Histories), and Samuel West (Any Human Heart). Who knew that shopping could be so thrilling!

Don't "Discount" This Show
I watched this series in England over the past two months, and I have to say, it proves that they do series better than we do. Its NOT a Downton Abbey, its better.
Not Downton - Better
People compare this to Downton, I can see why - set in the same time period and deals with class differences. thats where the comparisons stops though. This is a fantastic period drama. the main thing is that its based on real events, dramatised for TV of course but gives you an insight into the life of the man who made Selfridges what it is today. Hugely addictive, funny and sad at the same time. highly recommended
Third rate period drama
Phew! This is so bad it's almost watchable as a how not to film a period costume drama. Jeremy Pivens is laughable in the title role, I felt embarrassed for him….he should stick to Ari! Everyone else acquits themselves well, costume and sets are very well done but the script is just dire. I guess someone figured if americans love Downton Abbey they will love any costume drama set in Victorian/Edwardian England and they obviously are right as this is commercially successful. This is just a day time
soap with better production values and as such doesn't compare to Downton Abbey and there are far better period dramas on british television. Parades End is far superior to both of these anodyne series.
