Enjoying every week but...
If I were to critique this show I would correct on the level of storyline …for a show where one mystery involves many episodes there could be more build up to the drama in the first episode. Its not fair to compare really, but think of the first episode of Broad-church. The scene was set with riveting silence building up to the actual mystery. This held the audience very successfully. There the beginning scenes make the central event meaningful to the audience. A life is a very precious thing. Here is trivialized hugely…by the insincerity of most of the characters. and by the usual sarcasm built into the script. I like the 2 detectives …good acting.
Since this is a basic cable show I had higher than usual hopes for "Murder In The First" but as I watched I was struck but the flat acting. Kathleen Robertson plays a stereotypical divorcee. Taye Diggs plays the husband with a terminally ill wife but rather than being a stereotype I came away with the feeling that he was practicing grieving rather than feeling true grief and anguish over his wife's condition. Then there are the other cops on the squad most notably the one who announces to the whole squad that he's on a juice cleanse. The nail in the coffin for me was when the cops question a couple of little kids about a potential murderer they may have witnessed. These hard-boiled detectives are so good they cause one of the boys to wet his pants after which the kids proceeds to act as if nothing just happened. All in all this show comes across as if it wants to be "authentic" and that the writers had a lot of check boxes they wanted to check off. Rather than being good this show comes across as a lower quality version of "The Killing".
A Bit Dreary.
What was gained by having partners who have a wife in her final days of cancer and a deadbeat husband looking for alimony? Top that off with a despicable smug villain in a season long case. One partner is a perky blonde the other is a stoic black cop with anger issues, (done so much better in “Crisis”) together they face a universe I’m not sure I want to live in for 10 to 13 weeks. “King and Maxwell” was more fun and this clearly isn’t “Murder One”. Then there’s the sad ending, I won’t spoil – yes you got rid of a concept albatross – it was hardly a moment that makes me want to tune in next week.
