|1||HDClosed CaptioningVideoPilot||GANG RELATED centers on Detective RYAN LOPEZ (Ramon Rodriguez), a rising star in Los Angeles’ elite Gang Task Force who long before he became a cop, pledged allegiance to a different band of brothers – a powerful Latino gang called Los Angelicos. When Ryan’s best friend and police partner is senselessly killed by a notorious gang member, he teams up with longtime Task Force member CASSIUS GREEN, who has been at the forefront of the city’s war on organized crime. Despite his profession, Ryan is still beholden to the gang’s leader, JAVIER ACOSTA, the father figure he has tried to make proud his entire life and the man who masterminded his entry into the police force. It’s a secret that has been held for a decade by Ryan, Javier and Javier’s sons: cold-blooded gang lieutenant CARLOS; and straight-laced investment banker DANIEL, Ryan’s childhood best friend. But Ryan is starting to realize that he might be more dedicated to being a cop than he is to Los Angelicos. He is respected by his team, including TAE KIM, VERONICA “VEE” DOTSEN and Task Force leader SAM CHAPEL, Ryan’s other surrogate father figure, whose estranged daughter, JESSICA, is the city’s Assistant District Attorney.||45:09||Free||View in iTunes|

Who Wants Reality?
First off, this show is exactly what it claims to be: Fiction! Anyone writing a review claiming that it isn't "realistic" enough is obviously searching for a new episode of Cops! You want real? Come to my neighborhood and see it. No one wants that reality, trust me. This show is entertaining and packed with actors who can actually act. The storyline is good and it should last at least a few seasons. Thank you Fox for entertaining us without making us feel like were watching the news every night!
Pretentious and Shallow
Gang related opens to an origination scene of a young hispanic American who is presented with gang life by the bully son of a gang leader and his younger sibling a local friend. A viewer will immediately groan as the shaggy dog story is played out, but it turns out this is the high point of the show. The producers of Gang Related take a fairly capable set of actors and dress them in cartoon character histories that shows an incredible tone deafness to nuances of story telling. The hispanic cop gets reintroduced to use during an implausible armored car robber with limpet mines and mass casualties that would have had any other officer fired that instead results in a standing ovation at his gang unit. Reality is completely violated when he and his partner, carrying a pretty strong BAC, enter a dark warehouse in pursuit of a tagger and both get shot. So far I have avoided telling of the heavy handed plot twist that will turn the shaggy dog story into a 'what side is he on’ quizzer, because when the scene of the “powerful" Korean cop holding bolts that sear flesh with third degree charing in his hand, or the cop from “Harlem” with an accent that would normally be heard in a racist parody of inner city language, I stopped being able to watch the show.
Viewers who want a realistic look at gangs made with high art should look to the Wire. Less realistic but masterly crafted the Shield also fills the bill. Gang Related has some actors who could do neat things, but they are tied to impossible characters.
I love this show. It's action packed with great actors and a great plot.
