With cinematic scope, this powerful drama is uniquely narrated by lifelong family confidante Joey "Ice Cream," presenting tales of both intense action and charged emotion. With their Black Irish roots, the Donnellys' fierce loyalty to each other knows no bounds. And whether they know it or not, the four brothers have just taken over the neighborhood: Tommy is the leader, with a knack for drawing and getting the others out of trouble; Jimmy, with a hot temper and a drug problem, owns the bar that's become their base of operations; Kevin is struggling to shake a gambling habit, but his loyalty to family is always a sure bet; and the youngest, Sean may be considered the baby, but he's also a lady killer. Then there's Jenny Reilly, who's always been there for the family and shares a special bond with Tommy. No matter the enemy or the circumstance they face, one thing is a constant for the Donnellys — the bonds of brotherhood are stronger than anything.

Save the Donnellys.

This show is fantastic -- believable characters, impressively realistic dialogue, heartbreaking cinematography (especially in the end of the pilot - most beautiful 5 minutes I've ever watched.) Though the narration style is choppy, and I would prefer if Joey Ice Cream only introduced and then ended the show (because I love his character) rather than pop in randomly throughout, this show is eminently workable and I will certainly keep watching. However, its awkward midseason placement and bad timeslot continue to drop its ratings. Nothing is wrong with the show, and if you watch all the way through it will intrigue and captivate you. Critics dismiss it, saying it's not as good as the Sopranos - but not everything can be, and The Black Donnellys is certainly one of the best shows on television now. Tell everyone to watch it, and bring the ratings up -- if this gets canceled I'll swear off TV for good, because this is the only show I watch anyway. The music is also remarkably beautiful (and iTunes should certainly get Mike Schmid's lovely "In My Dream" and "Forget You" which were both played in A Stone Of The Heart) and placed well throughout. Alive and realistic characters, smart dialogue, intriguing plot, great cinematography, plus several quite cute Irish guys. It's a marvelous show.

In the spirit of The Departed, The Godfather, and a GTA type plot, this show had an amazing premier. The end of the episode has a great twist, and the writers of crash do a great job. I cannot wait to see the Godfather like rise of Tommy occur. This had a great premier and I am sure this show will not let down.

Potential for Greatness

This show, as evidenced by the pilot has the potential to become a great saga of a family, who is in crime; the tradition that "The Sopranos" perfected on television of family first and business second. Of course, this being an NBC show, it doesn't have the edge that made shows like "The Sopranos" so enjoyable to watch. While there are a few smack down scenes, do to unfortunate camera cuts, all the audience saw was some cool bat juggling. The narration quality of the show adds a unique aspect, and I believe that if the writers could incorporate some first-person bias twists and turns, we could have a much enhanced viewing experience. The pilot felt a bit drug out at times, but a spectacular beginning and end made up for it for the most part.
