There's nothing more exciting than the opening night of a hit Broadway musical, except maybe what happens getting there. While Wicked and The Lion King pack audiences in on the Great White Way, Julia and Tom, a successful songwriting team played by Debra Messing and Christian Borle, begin work on a new musical based on the life of Marilyn Monroe. When a tenacious producer (Anjelica Houston) jumps aboard, so begins the difficult task of casting the silver screen icon. Ivy Lynn, a tough Broadway veteran, seems like the obvious choice. But enter Karen Cartwright (Katharine McPhee), a young girl from Iowa with a dream of making it on Broadway who walks in and blows everyone away. So who will get the part and begin a journey that will change their lives? It's an age-old story, but a star just might be born once again. While everyone is consumed with putting the show together, real life has a tendency of getting in the way. Julia and her husband are in the middle of a complicated adoption; the producer's husband begins divorce proceedings which could threaten the finances of the show; and the brilliant but womanizing director could derail everything if he puts the young star in a compromising position. This will be a rollercoaster ride that culminates on opening night when the audience gets to determine whether or not the show is a smash! In the era of The Voice and Glee, executive producers Steven Spielberg and Craig Zadan & Neil Meron (producers of Chicago and Hairspray), and songwriters Marc Shaiman and Scott Wittman (Hairspray), bring you the blood, sweat, and tears of the making of a Broadway musical.

Customer Reviews

I can't begin to express my delight that Karen was chosen to be Marilyn. I have been on Team Karen since her Idol days. I still don't know how she did not win that season. But I am a firm believer that things happen for a reason and clearly she was meant to take another path. I love this show and CANNOT wait for season 2! I love the whole cast and production. Please keep us enticed with a few morsels now and then. . . it will be painful waiting. Meanwhile I will be reviewing season one on a regular basis to satisfy my cravings! <3

Some like it hot...and some just know how to sizzle

In a word FANTASTIC!!! It hooks you immediately. The acting, the singing and the story line all sizzle and make you sit up straighter and lean in closer to the screen. The talent is beyond the small screen and you can feel the bright lights and big city, while at the same time the intimacy and intensity of the characters emotions wash over you. Bravo!!!!!!!!!!!

Best show in years! by M Casey

I have been a fan of Katharine McPhee since Idol, and am finally glad to see her in what I think is the best show in many years. All the actors are fantastic and definately cast in roles that show off their individual talents! This is only the pilot and we all know that it will develop even more as the cast, writers and directors get to know each other, I don't really see how it can get any better, but I will definately be there to watch! I think the only thing that might be it's downfall is that lots of the audience that watch the prime time shows are not appreciative of this type of entertainment and may pass it up, but once word gets out about the quality of the show I think it will draw an audience that otherwise look for their entertainment on HBO and Showtime. Can't even put in words how awesome SMASH is!
