David Tennant and Janet Montgomery star in this adaptation of Alan Furst's celebrated spy novel set in Poland, Paris and Berlin in the years leading up to the Second World War. At the French embassy in Warsaw, the new military attaché, Colonel Jean-Francois Mercier, is drawn into a world of abduction, betrayal and intrigue in the diplomatic salons and back alleys of the city. At the same time, the handsome aristocrat is involved in a passionate love affair with a Parisian woman of polish heritage, a lawyer for the League of Nations. Risking his life, Mercier works in the shadows amid a remarkable cast of characters, some known to him as spies, some never to be revealed. It is a city where people drink and fight and spy and love, because no one knows what tomorrow will bring.

Spies of Warsaw

Good job of capturing the plot, milieu, and ambience of Furst's writing. Casting the lead role was a bit of a surprise at first, but I think now that the casting director really captured the classic Furst hero: quiet, competent, intelligent, compassionate, courageous by commitment to fairness, not ideology. Below the radar. Human. Not a superhero with superpowers, but an ordinary man cast in extraordinary times.

Not sure about this show

I want to like it but just can't. Half the show about the espionage is 3.5 stars or so but the part about his love affair I could care less if she lives or dies. Gotta give that aspect 1 star.

This is coming from a guy who liked the notebook also. There is just zero emotion or reason to care about them as a couple. Plus every scene is about 5x too long involving them.

Enjoyed it all.
