The Americans is a period drama about the complex marriage of two KGB spies posing as Americans in suburban Washington D.C. shortly after Ronald Reagan is elected President. The arranged marriage of Philip (Matthew Rhys) and Elizabeth Jennings (Keri Russell), who have two children – 13-year-old Paige (Holly Taylor) and 10-year-old Henry (Keidrich Sellati), who know nothing about their parents’ true identity – grows more passionate and genuine by the day, but is constantly tested by the escalation of the Cold War and the intimate, dangerous and darkly funny relationships they must maintain with a network of spies and informants under their control. Complicating their relationship further is Philip’s growing sense of affinity for America’s values and way of life. Tensions also heighten upon the arrival of a new neighbor, Stan Beeman (Noah Emmerich), an FBI agent. Stan and his partner, Agent Chris Amador (Maximiliano Hernández), are members of a new division of Counterintelligence tasked with fighting against foreign agents on U.S. soil, including KGB Directorate S illegals, Russian spies posing as Americans.

Customer Reviews

Wow - Impressive pilot.

I am not one to be gentle when it comes to critiquing TV shows and have only a few, all scripted, that I like. I do not need sexual inuendo, crudity , or gratuitous se x and violence to enjoy a show. In fact, just the opposite. I am too old, and I would hope, wise, for the pop culture to have much effect on me, so there ya have it, The Americans though, is somewhat different TV - Historically based, period wise anyway, it hits a time period that is dear to me, and has strong characters whom I think one can, as a viewer, care about, as well as a scenario that has infinite possibilities as far as exciting and tense interactions. To me this show appears to have the real potential to be a superior offering.

In short, I really liked it. It kept my interest throughout, and even brought back memories that it was nice to refresh. It will probably stuggle with the 18-45 or so demographic the sponsors worship, and thus, so do the networks, and with those viewers who have little historical perspective. The Americans will probably have a short life while crude comedies and reality shows thrive, but I cannot change that. I can however, watch it, and I shall, for as long as it lives, and I will make the best of this opportunity, regardless of its length. I would hope others would do the same,

Don't pay for commercials

Paid $.99 for the Pilot. Show was decent enough…but definitely not enough to sit through commercials after paying for a show. Fox does this on their main shows (see New Girl) and now they're doing it on subsidiary networks. Don't know about you, but I refuse to pay for shows with ads.

FX is saving TV

Truly original with excellent plot, script, acting, direction, and backdrop. I think anyone would enjoy this show, and I was hooked 5 minutes into the pilot. FX/USA are making network television look lazy. Suits, White Collar, Breaking Bad, Justified...the whole lot of these original series are fantastic. I put The Americans right at the top of any list. Enjoy.
