Description

As seen on SundanceTV, Maggie Gyllenhaal stars in this tense thriller set against the complex tapestry of political and emotional conflict. As a child Nessa Stein witnesses the assassination of her father by the PLO. As an adult, equal parts idealist and pragmatist, she goes on to inherit his arms business, and changes its course to lay data cables between Israel and the West Bank. Her effort to reconcile the Israelis and Palestinians lands her an appointment to the House of Lords and creates an international political maelstrom, leaving her under the scrutiny of Whitehall and the CIA.

WOW! Again, I'm reminded why I love BBC productions. Great performances, excellent writing, superb filming and editing make this seem like a feature film. I count the days between episodes, waiting to see if the next is as spellbinding as the last.

Well written, acted and directed

Aloha - I have always considered myself a newbie to the Palestinian - Israeli conflict and am very interested in seeing where this show takes us - especially given the current third war since the Gaza Blockade and the increasingly horrible conditions in Gaza. Politics aside, the first episode was beautifully shot, costumes are superb and I felt the plot was realistic - at least thus far. The challenge for any show in this genre these days is to move past whatever challenge that Homeland has created. How will they tell this story with precision and sensitivity, with the responsibility to try and hew the line with fairness and objectivity (if such can be had in the Middle East?). I am an unabashed Maggie Gyllenhaal fan from the early days and not just for her beauty - her delicate nuanced portrayal of this woman was a deliciously done acting treat (as it was with so many of the other actors). Enough accolades for now - just a shout out for the great writing and hoping they can hold it together and avoid the slide into maudlin, unrealistic portrayals of stock characters. Always tough to do but the BBC is a different animal. Makes me want to act again and I wish I could - but only in show like this - with a conscience. Thanks for reading - David

Best show in years

Difference between British and US audiences:

-Britain —> The Honourable Woman (Superb modern spy thriller)
-US —> Tyrant (cheesy soap opera posing as “smart”)

Similar subject matter, but orders of magnitude differences in depth, plot, sophistication, suspense, character development, realism. If it was a US show, I would bet the bank that it would be cancelled after season 1 (like the superb Rubicon). Being a BBC production leaves me very hopeful!

Overall, a superb series.
