Picking up where last season's cliffhanger left off, Laura Roslin (Mary McDonnell), thwarted in her efforts to steal the election from a man she suspects is somehow in collusion with the Cylons, loses her presidency to Giaus Baltar (James Callis), who promised safe refuge from the Cylons by settling on the recently discovered planet New Caprica. However, after a year of enduring harsh conditions and suffering under Baltar's self-indulgent government, the fleet's worst fears are realized when the Cylons discover their hiding place. With the battlestars Galactica and Pegasus helpless in the face of the arrival of a full Cylon fleet, the colonists are left to fend for themselves as Adama (Edward James Olmos) and Apollo (Jamie Bamber) are forced to jump away with the remaining fleet in order to save themselves — but vow to return. The Cylons offer President Baltar one dubious chance for survival: surrender and co-exist peacefully under Cylon rule or be annihilated.

Best Sci-Fi on TV
Here's why Battlestar Galactica is the best sci-fi show on TV: 1) The show takes a fresh look at modern conflicts. Hot topics like religion and political insurgency are given a new setting which in turn provides a fresh perspective for audiences. In the Season 3 debut, for example, the show's heroes are insurgents in an environment strikingly similar to Iraq. 2) Those familiar with the original Battlestar Galatica might think corny, but the new version succeeds by taking the basic premise of the original series, and adding new twists -- Cylons look and act human, the battles have a real military feel and realism, and the overall mythology is deep and sophisticated. 3) The cast and acting is excellent and is supported by outstanding writing. Each episode is multilayered, so there's a lot to sink your teeth into. The characters are well drawn and have nicely deepened over the seasons. 4) The special effects are well done, with a very original cinema verite / hand-held camera approach that adds to realism and grittyness of the battles scenes. 5) The show offers plenty of science fiction, but never at the expense of emotional power. And ultimately, that's what makes this show great -- the emotional connections and conflicts between the characters. BSG is the best sci-fi you can get on TV today, and one of the best series overall.
Why no widescreen?
First off, Battlestar Galactica is a great show. If my rating was just for the show, I would easily give it 5 stars. My criticism is the fact that the episodes available for download are full frame yet the show is broadcast on the Sci-Fi channel in widescreen. Thus a good chunk of the picture is gone in these downloads. Why? Why can't I get it in the same format it is broadcast? I wouldn't buy a movie in full frame and I really can't recommend a show that has had its cinematography butchered. SIgh, I guess this probably goes for many other shows on the iTunes store. iTunes, couldn't we at least be given the option of buying the full frame or widescreen format version?
good show, poor encoding quality....
is it me or does season 3 episode 1 look pretty bad in comparison with the previous seasons? perhaps it's because it's a longer episode, and they kept the bitrate down...
