Amazing show, be prepared to binge watch for the whole 5+ hours.
The usual super smart role for Gillian Anderson, with very smart plotting. Dark and psychological police procedural. Main character, Detective Stella Gibson, has her flaws but we rarely get to see such strong women allowed to unapologetically attack. Like a much stronger version of Sarah Linden, Gibson’s flaws make her a formidable foil for everyone she interacts with. Perfect for fans of the Killing, True Detectives, the Honorable Woman, or Southland. Shares that strong sense of place, where the place is almost a character in the story as much as the people.
Highly recommend watching with at least one friend and starting early enough to stay up and discuss for another few hours.
Gillian Anderson wins again
This is by far one of the best crime drama series on any network in any country, period.
It’s a Netflix original but has surpassed the quality of almost all their other productions. Gillian Anderson is so brilliant at this role, and in this style of acting she appears effortless, watching her is so easy. Her demeanor never waivers and her confidence is spot on despite any plot twist and curve ball thrown her way.
There is of course that prerequisite misogyny that often trails any story where a women is in the lead, and is always laid on extra thick when the story is about police/law enforcement. The sad thing is that it is so easy to accept because it is the norm. The thing is, Gillian Anderson crushes it. By “it” I am referring to that tough on the outside but quivering ball of hormones that seems to typify every “alpha female” in law enforcement stories. She is as steady and collected with her emotions and intellect as anyone and it totally confounds the men, and women she works with. Although this may sound boring and even a bit cold blooded, her character is written and played with such skill and emotion that you don’t ever doubt how real she is.
I highly recommend this show to anyone who wants to watch a superior crime drama free from usual bullish!t that litters network tv. You will not be disappointed in this gem.
This is a truly great show. Season 2 is just finishing screening in Ireland and the UK and I can assure you it is worth the waiting for!
