The Good Wife is a drama starring Emmy Award winner Julianna Margulies as a wife and mother who boldly assumes full responsibility for her family and re-enters the workforce after her husband's very public sex and political corruption scandal lands him in jail. Pushing aside the betrayal and public humiliation caused by her husband, Peter, Alicia Florrick starts over by pursuing her original career as a defense attorney. As a junior associate at a prestigious Chicago law firm, she joins her longtime friend, former law school classmate and firm partner Will Gardner, who is interested to see how Alicia will perform after 13 years out of the courtroom. Alicia is grateful the firm's top litigator, Diane Lockhart, offers to mentor her but discovers the offer has conditions and realizes she's going to need to succeed on her own merit. Alicia's main competition among the firm's 20-something new recruits is Cary, a recent Harvard grad who is affable on the surface, but is competitive to the core. Fortunately, Alicia finds an ally in Kalinda, the firm's tough in-house investigator. Gaining confidence every day, Alicia transforms herself from embarrassed politician's scorned wife to resilient career woman, especially for the sake of providing a stable home for her children, 14-year-old Zach and 13-year-old Grace. For the first time in years, Alicia trades in her identity as the "good wife" and takes charge of her own destiny.

Much better than what the promos indicated. GREAT acting. I hope it they can keep it at this level because it was an outstanding pilot.
Three-Dimensional Women On Television!
The reason I was so impressed by the pilot for this show is its portrayal of women.
Alicia Florrick (Julianna Margulies) is not a 2-dimensional or weak woman who simply "stands by her man," but neither is she totally heartless or disinterested in her husband's well-being. She is ambivalent about his place in her and her childrens' lives, but is always cautious about writing him off or badmouthing him to her children or the public. She does not simply emasculate him or file for divorce in a typical, "i am woman hear me roar" or Xena Warrior Princess sort of way. She's real...she's smart.
She is aided/confronted by scores of women in her office who seem to have already sized her up. While her boss (Christine Baranski) is very eager to come across as faithful female counterpart in a man's world, she proves herself no less selfish or prone to predjudice than any man could be when Alicia improves upon her game. Sonia, a shared assistant between Alicia and a man she is competing with for a job - does not appear at all interested in assiting her until after her success in the courtroom. Only Kalinda seems convinced enough of her talents to treat her with even a modicum of respect before she proves herself, and their relationship is portrayed through many complex shades of comeraderie and competition. Lesser actresses wouldn't have been equal to the task of giving their relationship the complex dynamic it has here.
Alicia is forced to earn her stripes in this episode both as an attorney and as a mother, and along the way we see a much more believable world of male/female interaction than what is usually portrayed on television. It's a shame more televised drama isn't as well-written or acted as "The Good Wife."
Looking forward to what's to come!
