On the drug-infested streets of West Baltimore, there are good guys and there are bad guys. Sometimes you need more than a badge to tell them apart. From HBO comes Season 1 of this highly realistic drama series that follows a single sprawling drug and murder investigation in Baltimore — one that culminates in a complex series of dangerous wiretaps and surveillance. Told from the points of view of both the police and their targets, the series captures a universe where easy distinctions between good and evil, and crime and punishment, are challenged at every turn. The ensemble cast includes Dominic West, John Doman, Idris Elba, Frankie R. Faison, Larry Gilliard Jr., Wood Harris, Domenick Lombardozzi, Deirdre Lovejoy, Wendell Pierce, Lance Reddick, Andre Royo, and Sonja Sohn.

It's hard not to sound over the top...
...when praising this show. I had heard so many reviews / reactions claiming it as television’s equivalent of the second coming, that I couldn’t help but going in cynically. I was fully prepared to see something good (or even great) that got caught up in hype-speak and left with a reputation that was just a little too good to be true. I mean, how many times has anyone heard “This is the best (blank) EVER!!!!” when first learning about something that’s really just above the low bar of quality most mainstream entertainment meets in the first place. But about half way through Season 1 my neighborhood was crow-free, because I had to stuff my dumb, doubting face full. When the history of TV gets written “The Wire” will be mentioned in the first paragraph. At the highest level it’s a bullhorn stuck on top of a meter stick calling everyone to look at the rising levels of crap modern society can effortlessly generate. At its least it’s the best cop drama on television. If I was a high school civics teacher I would make every student I could watch every hour of this show. To the “Infotainment” generation, it could be a wonderful tool make young people learn to take a second look around and not confuse the perception of functionality with what actually works. This show is a product of modern society and its one of it’s most relevant mirrors in literature/art/otherwise. And if these reviews sound too good to be true then please make the same mistake I did.
Far and away the Best Drama ever on Television
This gritty, brilliant drama is by far the most realistic, and stunningly captivating crime show ever produced. Following the dynamic between Baltimore's drug enforcement agents, and the drug trade run by Avon Barksdale, The Wire is one season-long cohesive story that is as gripping at the begining as it is in its fantastic conclusion. Here's hoping iTunes gets all further seasons so you can complete your set.
is the best thing ever put on television. Period.
