A powerful and haunting story from Oscar winning writer/director Jane Campion starring Elisabeth Moss, David Wenham, Peter Mullan and Holly Hunter. 12 years old and 5 months pregnant, Tui Mitcham walks into a freezing lake ... then disappears. Robin Griffin is a gutsy but inexperienced detective called in to investigate. As Robin becomes more and more obsessed with the search for Tui, she slowly begins to realize that finding Tui is tantamount to finding herself - a self she has kept well hidden. Set against one of the most amazing and untouched landscapes left on the planet, Top of the Lake is a powerful story about our search for happiness where the dream of paradise attracts it dark twin, the fall.

Best New Show

I can't get over how hooked I am on this show! What a superb treat. I started watching because I love Elisabeth Moss (Peggy of Mad Men). She is a brilliant actress, but not the only star in this show. Everyone, so far, as of Ep. 4 is wonderful. I usually multi-task while watching tv, but not here. I put the ipad down and watch with all my senses and faculties.

Uncensored Excellent first two episodes

Elisabeth Moss is excellent - certainly a departure from her character on Mad Men. The beauty of New Zealand is captured - as well as the simplicity of life in that part of the world. I have many relatives that live in NZ - they all describe an idyllic, simple life. The first two episodes drew me in and i'm ready for the next episode. There's no censorship on the episodes i downloaded. The rating was changed to TV-MA. I had avoided downloading these episodes because of previous postings of censorship but I noticed the rating had changed so took a chance. For those hesitant - it's ok - the episodes are in tact.

The acting is solid, the setting is beautiful, and at the beginning, the plot is intriguing. The show is strangely written, reveling in dysfunction, and depression, trying so hard to be twisted and different that it abandons reality and believable story arc. Towards the end of the season, the plot starts to unravel. The characters miss obvious choices and the plot 'surprises' are predictable. Wouldn't recommend.
