The storylines illustrate the human characteristics of doctors, nurses, and other medical personnel, and how their tremendous responsibilities affect their lives. Understaffed and overburdened, the doctors, first-year residents, and nurses of the chaotic hospital St. Eligius often rely on humor to cope with daily pressures. Presiding over them is the sagacious, avuncular Dr. Donald Westphall, vice chairman of the division of medicine. Other dedicated doctors, such as Annie Cavanero and Jack Morrison, struggle gamely against apathy, faceless bureaucrats, and demanding patients. Some of their colleagues are the talented surgeon Dr. Ben Samuels and the irrepressible Dr. Wayne Fiscus.

Best Hospital Show Ever! And maybe best drama ever...

An amazing series that mixed drama, comedy, humanity, pop culture and inside jokes – and week after week it succeeded. Though the first season needed to weave its way until it found firm footing, once David Birney left the cast and Lloyd Nolan & Mark Harmon became integral to the series the ensuing seasons grew stronger and stronger. But this is a great pilot set of episodes for a daring and original program. It puts shows like E.R., which relies on soap opera histrionics and shock value, to shame. In the final seasons especially, one had to tape the episodes (before TiVo!) to try and catch all the references and jokes that, while seemingly just added goofiness, became all the more relevant with the series' finale...

vintage not in description

This show is *ok* if you like really dated drama, not to mention clothes and hairstyles. It is alot slower and duller and older than ER (which is classic and ageless). Really todays buyers should be warned.

Great Show

This show followed Hill Street Blues as one of the classic TV shows on NBC during the 80's. The writing was fresh, funny, and gripping. Don't try just one show, but see several before you make a judgement. Look for special "guest" apperances from other shows! I love this show!
