Rick Castle (Nathan Fillion) is one of the world's most successful crime authors. But when his rock star lifestyle isn't enough, this bad boy goes looking for new trouble — and finds it working with smart, beautiful Detective Kate Beckett (Stana Katic). Inspired by her professional record and intrigued by her buttoned-up personality, Castle's found the model for his bold new character — whether she likes it or not. Now with the mayor's permission, Castle is on her case and in her way. Kate's initial disdain for Castle turns to grudging respect as he quickly proves that a background in plotting murders can be a valuable asset in catching killers. As they solve a new crime together each week, their partnership grows — as does their love-hate relationship. These two may not always see eye to eye, but together they might just write a whole new chapter in crime-solving.

Clichéd and done before ...

but that doesn't matter ONE BIT! What a great beginning. The dialogue was funny and the characters interesting. It was playful, charming, with a bit of depth not usually seen in this style of show. The sexual tension between the leads has been done before oh so many times - but it really works. For the genre wonderers who need it in a box, I'd describe it as a well written/acted and perfectly cast combination of Bones (with less science), Californication (with less fornication), with a splash of Moonlighting (for the 21st century). That is, watch it! :-)

A Must See

If you haven't seen this show yet you are missing a real treat. First off, fans of Nathan Fillion will not be disappointed: Rick Castle is a character that puts ever ounce of Fillion's charm and humor to good use. Even better, the show is great on its own merits. Castle is something all too rare in today’s gore and science filled crime dramas, it is a show driven by the characters and their relationships, in all their comedic and dysfunctional glory. Yes, it is a crime show dealing with murder and bad things, but it is taken just as seriously as Castle himself does, like a "nine year old on a sugar rush." That said the comedy does not overpower the mystery of the episode, but rather complements it in a fine balance.

I've got two words for you: Nathan Fillion.

Really, knowing Nathan Fillion was in it was enough. The fact that it's actually pretty good, especially for a pilot, it just a bonus. Fillion is the perfect actor for this--he keeps a self-indulgent, cocky character charming and likable. His facial expressions alone are worth a buck-ninety-nine. Indulge. It's pretty cool escapism that only promises to get better with age.
