EDITORS’ NOTES

Named for the ancient Japanese practice of repairing broken pottery with precious metals like gold or platinum, sophomore album Kintsugi sees socially conscious Cape Town rapper Sipho the Gift evolve both musically and philosophically. Its first single, “The Man”, depicts his jagged rise to hard-won success, and sees the Kimberley-born producer move away from his traditional, East Coast boom-bap roots towards a more melodic, Auto-Tune-friendly sound. The result is a multilayered, coming-of-age chronicle of a young producer set to shake up the game.

About Sipho the Gift

Sipho the Gift’s talent is supreme. The MC and producer is a bold lyricist whose wizardry has led to two outstanding projects. 2015’s Coming of Age documents an autobiographical tale of a young boy growing into a man, while 2017’s Kintsugi finds the man learning how to reconcile his past mistakes with a desire to become a better person. He has worked with others across the globe, including US rappers like Well$, Deniro Ferrar and King Mez. In 2017, he earned a nomination from the UK’s Urban Music Awards for Best Hip-Hop Act.
