News24: Breaking News. First. 12+

I have been a loyal reader of News24 and loyal user of this app for many years but I’m afraid I will no longer continue doing so.
There are far too many ads making it difficult to browse through articles and inevitably one is bound to tap on one that opens up an external link. Maybe that is the intention but I use the app to read news not to browse adverts. Furthermore, video ads play automatically and often unsolicitedly and repeatedly take over the screen forcing one having to close it over and over again. Not only is this all extremely irritating but more importantly uses up data making for a very unpleasant experience.
One would expect apps to become better over time but unfortunately this one has done exactly the opposite. Not what I would expect from such a reputable and respected news agency.

I have used and enjoyed the News24 app for years. The recent update which makes video adverts auto play is terrible. I first noticed it while sitting quietly reading news articles while my children fell asleep. It was quite jarring when a video suddenly started playing. That same video kept playing even though I was sure not to click on it. Today I was trying to listen to music on my headphones while catching up on the news, and every time I scrolled down, the music would stop (not pause) and even though I closed the ad, the music didn’t return. I had to switch to my music app and start it up again. After the third time this happened, I decided to write this review. I am switching to Google News if News24 can’t fix this! REALLY not a good user experience at all!

This has been my favourite app for the past 5 years and I have used it nearly daily. However with the new version the number of adverts is just excessive. And the embedded videos pop up automatically and often do so more than once during the course of an article making it incredibly difficult to even finish reading them. Besides this, every time these intrusive videos play (not just when they open in full-screen) it pauses any music you are listening to at the time, which is incredibly frustrating.

There is no ways I can continue to use the app when it is now using much more data and offers a significantly poorer and more interrupted user experience than before. Really disappointing.
